ABOUT THIS PROJECT
These newcomers learned the tools of photography and visual narration to tell their dreams and realities through the power of images.
They also learned to reflect on themes such as resilience, democracy, gender equality, etc.
This first cohort (10 participants) became the trainers after they completed the certification. They have trained 60 newcomers (second cohort) during the Winter 2021. Throughout this process, U Shine Movement has overseen a continuing mentorship of all participants.
WHY THIS PROJECT?
Research has demonstrated that photo storytelling is an effective, powerful medium to engage refugee youth in arts, to support healthy development/integration of newcomers.
WHO BENEFITS FROM THE PROJECT?
70 refugees and immigrants in Ottawa from 2021-2022.
WHAT ABOUT THE IMPACT?
For the Ottawa region, we are looking to reach 325 community members to attend a photography exhibit in 2021.
This exhibit will be presented in other parts of the country (through French Alliances) starting in August 2021.
